Why back surgery, if it isn’t effective?

Did you know that there is an 80% chance that you will suffer from back pain, if you already haven’t? Did you know that there are 500,000 disc surgeries annually and that most of them are unnecessary and ineffective?  Several studies now indicate that for many patients, fusion surgeries designed to alleviate the pain from degenerative discs, disc herniation’s, and/or radiculopathy do not work. This can lead to significant increase with disability, opiate use, prolonged work loss and poor return to work status. On the plus side, the medical world is now rethinking its approach to back problems because “the world of spinal medicine, unfortunately, is producing patients with failed back surgery syndrome at an alarming rate”. “There is an overwhelming body of evidence indicating that chiropractic management of low back pain is more cost-effective than medical management.” Dr. Anthony Rosner testifying before of the Institute of Medicine, stated, “Today we can argue that chiropractic care, at least for back pain, appears to have vaulted from last to first place as a treatment option.”  Spread the word to your friends and loved ones!

Why We Are So Good With Back and Neck Pain Patients

If you or someone you know are skeptical about chiropractic care, here are some interesting details that help explain why chiropractors are so effective treating neck and back pain patients.  Chiropractic schools require 4200 hours of education for students including a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology.  The curriculum enables students to be efficient in neuro-muscular skeletal evaluation, treatment and management. The curriculum also includes, physical diagnosis, spinal analysis, biomechanics, orthopedics and neurology.  In fact, compared to med students this is far beyond what they receive.  That is just a few reasons why chiropractors are so good with neck and back pain patients….!!

Fall Chores and Back Pain

With fall underway and winter here shortly, many people are working vigorously in their yards getting the plants, bushes, house and gutters prepped for winter.  This is a time for lower back injuries and it happens often this time of year and I see many patients because of this.  Take care to lift the many bags of yard waste properly and also be careful with spending a long time in a bent over position while weeding or gardening.  Those with injuries from these mundane chores often feel pain immediately or several days after activity.  They may feel fatigue in the lower back initially then develop pain and tightness over the next few days.  If you develop low back or neck pain, schedule an appointment with your chiropractor as soon as possible as it will help shorten the time of recovery and reduce the intensity of the pain….!!

Help The Little Guy

A short while ago I discussed the fact that small physician practices are going the way of the dinosaur for many reasons but mostly due to health insurance reimbursement.  In fact, I had the opportunity to discuss this issue with a COO of one of the local major hospital health care systems. He intimated that due to insurance reimbursement, many hospitals are hurting financially and are in competition to gobble up local physician groups or other hospital groups to help increase revenue. Now, many independent doctors and smaller physician groups are forced to join hospitals systems because they are losing money and need to be able to pay their bills or they go out of business.  This forces more patients into “narrow” doctor networks, many at hospital settings. As insurance rates go up and patient benefits decline, physician revenue declines, service declines, wait time to see doctors increases, unnecessary tests are ordered.  Only one of the three players in this health care situation wins and it isn’t the doctor or patient. Please try to support your local small business physician, as they truly need it!

Chiropractic Bests Medical Care for Low Back Pain

Did you know 40 million Americans will experience “frequent” low back pain  (LBP) with 15% suffering LBP for at least 2 weeks at a time? A small study comparing Chiropractic treatment to patient, verses medical treatment, shows why chiropractic should be the go-to for treatment of LBP. Chiropractic patients showed better overall improvement and satisfaction after one month compared to those treated by a general family physician. Chiropractic patients showed substantial decreases with pain severity, functional disability and pain quality while medical patients showed minimal improvements with regard to the first two measures while actually deteriorating in the third measure.  This means their (medical patients) pain quality actually got worse with medical care.  We know more now than ever, about the benefits of Chiropractic care.  Don’t hesitate to visit your Chiropractor because it is a matter of health and healthy life!!

Spine Pain, Chiropractic & You

Have you ever heard of the term “stenosis”?  It is a term describing the narrowing of an opening.  It is a very common term in those with spine pain.  Often times, individuals who have back pain or neck pain have spinal stenosis. This is a narrowing of the spinal canal where the spinal cord rests or the foramen where the nerve exit the vertebra. As we age, degenerative changes in the spine often cause a narrowing in regions of the spinal canal itself or the foramen (opening) where the nerve exits the spinal canal.  The cause can be due to extra bony growth or a herniated/bulging disc which creates pressure on surrounding structures creating pain, numbness, tingling or even weakness.  Some people have it and have no symptoms.  The good news is that the natural history of lumbar stenosis is generally very favorable and there are many conservative options including Chiropractic!.  Talk to your doc and find out what options are available

Car Accidents & Pain

I was recently in an auto accident where a drunk driver struck my stopped truck from behind at a fairly high speed.  I have never been in such a violent collision before and I am quite sore after a couple weeks. I see patients all the time who have been in accidents and come to my office for treatment that can help them recover quicker and get back to their daily activities and functions pain free.  Now, I do have a greater appreciation for what it feels like when patients describe their collision and injuries.  Fortunately I believe everyone involved in my accident will be fine, however if you are ever in an accident that requires treatment for your injuries, give Chiropractic a chance to help you. You won’t regret it!

Osteoarthritis Pain & Chiropractic

Did you know osteoarthritis (OA) can occur in young people as well as older folks. In fact it occurs in about 14% of the population between the ages of 25 and 65. Osteoarthritis is by far the most common form of arthritis and is known as the “wear and tear” or “degenerative” type of arthritis. It often occurs in the spine but the hands, knees and hips are other common regions. The joints can be mildly painful or extremely painful with OA and Chiropractic care can go a long way to improve these painful joints as well as maintain the joint function and mobility. Talk to your Chiro Doc!

Back Pain & FTP Syndrome

Back pain comes in many varieties and the causes are even more abundant.  However, some back pain can be caused by something known as forward-tipped-pelvis (FTP). This is a condition by which the pelvic bone rotates down and forward.  A simple way to check for this is to look in to a mirror as you stand sideways. If the beltline is lower in front than in the back, chances are, you have it. This can create pulled muscles, stress joints and ligaments, compress spinal discs. The low back has moved into a hyperextended position. Fortunately, this is usually due to muscle imbalances around the hips, such as, too much tightness in some muscles and weakness in others.  Often times just stretching the tight quadriceps muscles and strengthening the weak hamstrings will help alleviate this. This simple fix can actually help patients avoid surgery.  It only take about 5 minutes of exercise daily to reduce back pain and the chances of an unnecessary surgery.
