Sitting and Heart Damage (it’s real)

Check this out!! If you haven’t heard, sitting for long periods every day is bad for us. If fact, it increases the risk for diabetes and cancer and doubles the risk for cardiovascular disease. More importantly, now we know how. When we sit all day, it is linked to a buildup of certain proteins called troponins, which heart muscles release when they are damaged. These are markers that physicians look at when diagnosing a heart attack. Researchers found that those who sit more than 10 hours a day had above normal troponin levels. They referred to this condition as “subclinical cardiac injury” which isn’t quite high enough to qualify as heart attack level damage. People who sit more have more signs of this particular heart damage. Thus, there is likely a strong connection between sitting and chronic heart damage even if there isn’t clear definitive causation at this time. The bottom line is to move and move often, exercise and stop sitting so much…!!

Sugar and cancer connection?

Do you have a sweet tooth? If you are one of the millions of people who like their sugar, you may want to give this a look. In a recent study scientist have possibly identified a link between sugar and cancer. Though there is no specific direct connection in humans yet, they have identified that when sugar is broken down within our cells, an intermediate compound that is produced during the process activates a specific protein that can mutate into a cancerous gene. Though the study was done on yeast cells, they acted like cancer cells, which rely on taking in glucose and fermenting it to produce lactic acid. Normal cells take in glucose and turn it into carbon dioxide and water. The takeaway here is that cancer patients may want to avoid as much sugary intake as possible to stop proliferation of cancer cells, since all cells use glucose. More research need to be done however it is food for thought!

Prostate Screening

Hey guys, prostate cancer is one of the most common types among men. Though statistics show about 180,000 men a year are diagnosed with prostate cancer, only about 14% of those men will die from prostate cancer. Many prostate cancers grow slowly or not at all and some men will experience no symptoms, nor will they die of cancer. Prostate screening has been a contentious issue ever since the PSA test was devised. Unfortunately, PSA tests literally miss about as many cases of cancer than it finds as it is a imperfect test.  PSA can rise for many reasons including infections or benign enlargement of the prostate. Because these tests are imperfect, there are a number of missed cancers but also a significant number of false alarms. About 70% of men with elevated PSA do not have cancer when biopsied.  Often times surgery/radiation to remove the prostate can cause incontinence, impotence, bowel injury and problems urinating. There are new guidelines encouraging men 55-69 with no symptoms or history to discuss these screening concerns with their doctor, as screening can lead to unnecessary biopsies and treatments. Monitoring prostate cancer is now becoming more mainstream through repeated PSA tests without the rush to treat.  Apparently, men who have low-risk prostate cancer, don’t necessarily need aggressive treatment immediately and can be safely monitored. BMI, Health and Cancer Risks

BMI (basal metabolic index) has for a long time, been an indicator of how fat a person is. Healthy, overweight, obese and morbidly obese. Over the last several years its validity has come into question.  However, one of the things that BMI does provide, is a very good predictor of how ones health will be in the future.  Though one can be healthy with a higher than desirable BMI, there is a growing body of evidence that a normal range BMI offers protection against the risk of cancer later in life.  More on this Friday.
