Where does the money go?

You probably know that the US spends the most on healthcare in the world as a % of GDP. In fact, between 1996-2013, spending increased 933.5 billion dollars. That’s almost a trillion dollars. Here is the scary part. Did you know that during this same time, utilization of healthcare (inpatient) went down? That’s right….utilization went down significantly but health cost continued to rise during that same time. Thus, unlike most free markets, when demand went down, prices went up. This is the exact opposite of what usually (does) happen. The biggest slice of the pie, relative to price increases, was the costs of pharmaceuticals. Fifty percent of the health care cost increases were due to higher med prices, with diabetic meds leading the way. Seems like the health care deck is stacked against us. More on this next time.

No Surgery Please!

You have heard me tout this same information before, but this is important. Eighty percent of all adults will experience some type of back pain in their lives. Very recent studies show that for chronic back pain, surgery doesn’t work any better than conservative care. An 11 year follow-up study of spinal fusion patients showed that their self-rated outcomes, were no better than those patients that went with conservative care, for their back pain. This conservative care includes chiropractic. This is not the first study to support conservative care for lower back pain. Please pass this along to family and friends! Just remember, you can never undo a back surgery.

Reversing Type 2 diabetes!!

Did you know that Type 2 diabetes is reversible? It definitely is and a new study just proved it. During the study, half of the participants were assigned a diet/weight management plan and the other half, the usual treatment for diabetes including diabetic drugs. Those on the diet stopped their meds the same day the diet started. At the end of study most people in the diet group lost an average of 22 pounds compared to the control group who average just a 2 pound loss. However, 46% of the people in the diet group went into remission with their diabetes compared to only 4% with the med group. Lifestyle changes can help control many diseases, it does take commitment, but it is possible!!
